Walk Grades

How easy is this walk?

Walk grading is provided as a general guide only. If you have any doubt about your fitness for a walk please contact the walk leader in advance. Please think about the distance of the walk and difficulty. Peak district walks will generally be more strenuous than Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire walks. Also, bear in mind the possibility of bad weather, which can make a walk more difficult than planned. If you are unsure of your fitness level, try a Leisurely graded walk first. It’s much better to find a walk that is a little too slow and easy than to try a more strenuous walk and exhaust yourself and hold up the walk for others. Walk Leaders have the right to refuse participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped, unfit or deemed inappropriate for that activity. People in doubt about their fitness and suitability should contact the Walk/Group leader in advance to avoid an unnecessary journey. The walks programmes are graded for difficulty as follows:

Leisurely


Walks for reasonably fit people with country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths and low hills. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing are recommended. Length of walk - Up to 8 miles.

Moderate


Walks for reasonably fit people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. Will include steep paths and open country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing are essential. Length of walk- At least 8 miles

Strenuous


Walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. Will include steep hills and rough country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing are essential. People in doubt about their fitness should contact the leader in advance. Length of walk:- Up to 10 miles.

Very Strenuous


A longer walk for experienced and very fit walkers. May require scrambling and a head for heights. Walking boots and warm waterproof clothing are essential. You must contact the walk leader in advance. Length of walk 12 or more miles.
